Unit 09 Production Target 02

For this project I wanted to look at green screens and how to create pieces of work using them. The reason I did this was because I am co-creating a film in the new year. The most difficult scene in the film will be the green scene. This is why I focussed on it in this research project. I started of by looking at films that have used them and how they used the green screens. On of the most important things I noticed was the lighting, the better lighting you had the easier it will be in post-production. The fist test I did was in the studio trying out different lights and placing the lights in different places to get different looks. For the video you can see how different lighting will change how the over piece looks.

After doing this first test I wanted to focus more on what the scene from the film would look like. Since I had a good idea of what lighting was needed to get a good green screen for post-production. In this film I'm working on the character is falling from a height, So I wanted to see how I could show the actor lying on a green screen and shower the background underneath them. The set up was very different from the first test as I had to light a larger area of the green screen. I did have a big problem when doing this, the green screen had lots of creases which is a problem when lighting.

This is a rough idea of what the scene would look like. I created the background in Premier Pro using stock footage of three different clips. I was happy with how this turned out.

From doing this project it gave me a better understanding of how much work goes into using and creating footage with green screens.

Unit 09 Production Target 1

This was a task that was given to use to experiment with high frame rate. The theme of my video was an advert for nike. We wanted to focus on running because this is one of the best ways to use high frame rate footage. I was really happy with how this work turned out.
To create the slow motion we set our cameras to record on 60fps in 720p then when we edited the clips we could change the the speed of the clips to 50% so it would be in slow motion.

We had to create a live show using the tri-caster. This was was the second time using this type of recording so I had a good understanding

Quick Cuts- Shaun of the Dead

In the scene you can see a large number of cuts. In this scene they use a lot of zoom cuts, you can see the camera starts to zoom in on and object e.g Shaun brushing his teeth or him putting on his work badge. Once the camera starts to zoom it will cut to the next scene. Also with this clips you see how each part is very quick and fast moving, this works well because it helps keep the pace. In this scene they use a OTH when the toilet is being used, they have also used a lot close up shots by doing this it makes the zooms more powerful.

Toy Poster

For the final task of this unit we had to make a poster for a toy. We had to use blocks to design the toy as they would be made out of little blocks that you connect to build the house. I decided I would draw over the top of the design so you could get a better understanding of what you can create. I am happy with how it turned out.
As this is my first time doing something like this I know the house is a bit wonky but I didn't have time to change. So that is something I would change if I was to do it again.

Muffin Poster Overview

For the final task of this unit we had to create a piece of work about a certain theme. I decided I would do a piece on healthy eating. I thought I would make a poster about how to make heathy muffins. I found a recipe online and copied it, to make the poster better i added photos of what they look like. I am really happy with how it turned out.

Filming and Editing the clips for the Monologue

For this film I want the audience to see the character sat at his desk writing his letter. So I decided when you hear the monologue you will see shots of him at his desk writing. I didn't just want it to be shots of the camera on the tripod so I used the dolly to get tracking shots. I did this because I knew it would look better and I also I wanted to experiment with the dolly and see what sort of shots I can get.
For the editing process of the clips I started by adding adding 'Warp Stabilizer' I did this because I wanted the shots to be smooth and have good motion, the floor in the stdio was smooth however there are a few bumps so sometimes the stabilizer didn't work. So i had to take it of for a clips which is fine because I still feel like they look good. The other big thing I change with these clips was the colour. The bulb that was in the light gave of a warmer tone which I didn't wanted. I used 'Three-way Colour Corrector' for this. I feel like I was able to get the colours that I wanted. I know that changing the colours really helped with the mood of the film. I was able to make it look more dark but also have a more natural look.

Primary and Secondary Research

For this project the research was very important it helped me get better understanding of the topic and how to make a film that doesn't sound fake.
When I did my secondary research it really helped me look at different types of monologues and how to write and good one. As this was a very important part of my film and the monologue had to be perfect. With the secondary research it also helped to get a good understanding of really life stories from people who suffer from mental health problems like suicide and depression. The two books were the key to this, when reading them it really helped me get the monologue to its best. I also decided to look at the stats of suicide in UK, I found this difficult to look at because I found out the rates were higher than I thought. Espacillay as the ages we're from 15 and older, this deffanity proved my point that suicide is a big problem and it needs to be talked about.

When it came to me doing my primary research it was a little more difficult because I was making a film about suicide I had to be more carful with what I do. I had to make sure I was considerate of people and there feelings, this is why I didn't do a survey. I felt like it could come across as inconsiderate and rude. I knew I could of done one but I wouldn't of been able to ask the questions I wanted to also I knew the answers weren't gaining to be yes or no answer. So instead decided I would do a focus group. This was a very important for me to do because I was able to ask the questions that would have longer answers also when I was doing this focus group you go see the emotion and hear the emotion, I know I wouldn't of got that with a survey. Plus from doing the focus I found out what sort of film people would like to watch.

Overall my research has really helped me with getting a better understanding of what sort of film I will make. I have a good understanding of what sort of monologue I should write and what scenes I shot film.

Project Review

When I look back at my first ideas and what sort of film I wanted to make I think I have been able to accomplish it. I know it didn't go word for word scene for scene, but I know I got the message across. I wanted to make a film about someone's final thoughts, their final memories, and I think I was able to do this. When I watch the film back I know I have made a film that I am proud of.

However there were something that I did struggle with: I wish I had kept to a tighter production schedule. I think by not doing this I wasn't able to get every shot I wanted, and that I did have to cut a flashback out,  also how I had to change the happy flashback. I have also struggled with the research: I wanted to focus on making the film and making sure it was the best it can be; so the research took a back seat and then I had to rush it and change what I wanted to do.

I have really enjoyed this project. I liked how we could pick the topic; I think this really helped make the project special to me. I was able to make a film on any topic that I wanted and I have wanted to make a film about mental health for a long time; I feel like it is something that people need to be made more aware of, especially after looking at the suicide rates of people in the UK aged 15 and above.
Also I enjoyed editing this short film, the reason I enjoyed this so much was I liked to see the film come together. My favourite scene to film was at the Clifton Observatory; the reason I liked filming this part so much was it was the happiest part of the film. I really feel like I was able to show that and show a good range of shots.

If I was to do this project again I would have liked to do the graveyard scene again. I feel like it is the weakest point of my film. It was rushed and the camera settings were wrong.

Overall I am happy with how this project turned out, I feel like I was able to get a better understanding of mental health before I started filming which really helped when creating this film.

Filming at Bath Abbey Observatory

Today I filmed my final scene, this was the first flash back in the film. I left this one to the end as it was more difficult to film. I needed to go at a time of day when no one would be there also the weather has been bad over the last few days which has made me push this shoot back a few days.
Overall I have happy with how the footage came out.

Primary Research- Test Screen

For another piece of primary research I wanted to do a test screening and get feed back from people about what they like about my film and what they think I should change to make it better. I asked people who have had nothing to do with my film. I think this is the best way to do a test screening because they will have no idea what the film is about.

The first person I asked thinks that the Bristol bridge scene could be a bit shorter, they explained it as they felt the monologue was very powerful and they wanted to keep that power throughout the film so making the flash back slightly sorter. I like this idea as i think it will help with the flow of the film.

One of the other comments I had about my film was the 'warp stabilizer', and how it work in some of the monologue clips. I had the same thought when I put the affect on the clips. I have tried to fix these clips but it hasn't worked. I know I will try other ways to make the clips smooth and have good motion.

Primary Research- Focus Group

For my primary research I had to more carful with what I did as my project is about suicide and depression. I didn't wan to do a survey as I would of been asking personal questions. So I decided I would do a focus group with people in college. This way I was able to talk to the people before and explain what I would be asking and making sure they were okay with the questions. After doing this focus group I was able to get a good understanding of what sort of film I should make.

I plan to do a test screening later one when I have done more editing. I want to do this because it would help with getting peoples ideas on how I could make it better.

Presentation Reflection

I feel like my presentation went well I was able to get across my idea and explain what I wanted to create. After given my presentation I was told I need to be carful with how I do my research and create this film as it is about mental health. I now need to make sure I don't make sure my film is not disrespectful to anyone who has suffered from mental health.

Filming at Clifton Observatory

For one of my flash backs I want to show a happy memory. At the beginning of the project I had planned to go to the beach to film this scene. However the weather was always changing so I decide to film in Bristol. I did this because this because I knew I could get the shots I wanted and if the weather did turn bad it wouldn't be a wasted trip. For this scene I wanted to show the character remember a good time, I didn't want to make it to happy because I felt like it would change the flow and it wouldn't work. So I decided to make it more of a chill scene. Im really happy with how the shots turned out.
For the editing of this scene I add 'Warp Stabilizer' just to make sure the shots were smooth. They were all ready quite good because I was using a wide angel lens. I didn't do any colour correction, I did this because I was as happy with how the natural colours looked.

Budget

This is the budget I have created for this project.
This list shows how much I would have to spend if I didn't have college allowing us to use there equipment. How ever as I am able to use the equipment form college the only thing I need to pay for is the petrol when we going to to location.
This is the budget for the whole project as I will be doing more location shooting I will only need the studio for one day.

Recording the Monologue

For the first part of my FMP I wanted to record the monologue. I did this because the monologue is the main part of the film and I wanted to know how long it would be so I could get and idea of how long the whole film would be. Also I did this first because it's the most important part of the film the whole story is told in the in the monologue so it needs to per perfect. I also know if I record the monologue now I will have time latter on if I need to re-recored it.
To record it I used a shotgun microphone and zoom recorder in the studio I wanted to use the shotgun microphone because I knew I would get a sound because I was using a fuzzy which will help with the sound. I asked the actor to leave a few second brake when there was a flash back so when I edit it I know where everything needs to go. This will really help to get an idea of the flow and how the film is going to feel.  After doing this I need to record the clips that are going to go over the monologue.

Research for Instagram Promo Videos

For my first video I am doing a time-lapse style with music over the top. Im using this video as research because it shows a good range of clips and what you can with a time-lapse. For the audio I will only be putting music over the top. I am doing this because I want the focus to be on the clips and not the audio. For this first video they have just placed music over the top.

For my second video I am recording a music video. I will be putting more focus into the audio as the first video is more and the camera shots. I want to use the studio for this video. I will be using microphone going through a sound desk then recording that with a zoom recorder. For this video they record the sound in using microphones this is because you will have abetter sound than if you were using the camera audio. Also by using microphones you are able to change the sounds in post production,

Flow Chart

This is the flow chart I have created for my FMP. The reason I did it in this way is because I felt like it shows a simple way of how I am going to create my film. A large part of the process is the research I have done this because I want to make sure I am getting the true facts and figures behind suicide.

Reflection on Units 1-7

Units 1,2,3 media Pass Port
For the first three units we covered and range of moving image, Interactive and theory work.
From doing this work I learnt how to create a story and how to make it interesting. this is because we had to create a silent film. I also learnt a lot about recording audio which has helped throughout other projects.
In these units of work I also learnt a little bit about interactive and animation. We had to create info graphics and basic animations. I know this wont me for my FMP as I am creating a short film.
For the theory side of these units we learnt how to conduct Primary and Secondary research. This is going to be very useful for my FMP as I will need to make sure I have strong research and also the theory parts helped with my writing which again will be needed for my FMP

Unit 4
This unit was based around the theory side of media. Throughout this unit we learnt new terms and meanings. We learnt about advertising campaigns we also had to create one of are own piece of advertising. For my piece I looked at health eating and created a posted about muffins and their recipe. We also looked at focus group and how to create one. This will come in good use in my FMP as I will need to do lots of research.

Unit 5
This unit of work was based around audio. This was a shorter unit. The main goal was to create two promo videos that would put on our Instagram's. I decided to make a promo video for the Bath Abbey, for this video I focused more on the camera shot then added music in over the top. For my second video I recorded a music in the studio. This video had a bigger look at audio as this is a audio unit. This unit will some what help with my FMP as it was another unit of practising my skills.

Unit 6
This was a publishing unit where we looked at website design. We were tasked to design a website around a project of our choice, we had to create a home and product page for computers and mobile. I decided to use my Bose headphones as my product. I really enjoyed this unit I was able to use my photoshop skills that I learnt form doing my photography A-Level. I also learnt new skills like how to create a skeleton outline for a website. This unit wont really help with my FMP but I know it will help next year when I want to design publishing pieces for my films.

Unit 7
This unit was based around animation we had to create a sort animation about popcorn. We had to use buttons to make it more interactive. I didn't enjoy this unit as much as the others because animation is something that I'm mot really interested in. How ever I am happy that I learnt a new program, which I might have to use at some point in the future.

Mind Map

This is my mind map for my FMP I am basing my film are suicide. I have broken down the main points of the film and where i’m going to do the main shooting of the film. The reason I'm making this film is because its very close to heart and I feel like it is a very important subject to look at. The reason I have broken it down in to short clips is because I feel like it will show more emotion and it will help show the audience how the charter is feeling.Mind Map FMP.jpg

FMP- Secondary Research

For my secondary research I am going to start of by looking at famous film monologues, Youtube videos and the facts and figures behind suicide and depression I will also look at two different books. I want to look at how they are filmed and how they are presented. When it comes to the facts and figures I want to see what the true facts are behind suicide and depression.

Films
Good Will Hunting -My first monologues I looked at the bench scene from Good Will Hunting. I choses this monologue because it the camera work was simple there was one two different camera angles. This doesn't take away from how powerful this monologue. The way it starts you have Robin Williams character taring Matt Damon's  character apart say he is inexperienced and how he hasn't lived life. But when you get to the end the mood changes. The Robin's character changes he starts talking about how he doesn't know what Matt's character has been through. I think this is one of the best film monologues.

YouTube Videos
Teen Suicide and Drug Monologue
-The reason I have chosen to look at this video is because of how simple it is. There is just one camera not cutting no special affects just one person talking to a camera. The reason this video is good is because of the way it was presented you can tell the person has so much emotion behind it. This video proves that the should be the main focus of a film/short film.

Books
The Bell Jar- Sylvia Plath
SparkNotes- Plot over view

Quotes

“Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one’s head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no tomorrow. To forget time, to forgive life, to be at peace.”

The reason I wanted to look at this book is because I felt like it would give a really good view on depression. The reason I am doing this is because I want to get a good understanding of how depression and suicide was talked about and dealt with in the 1900's.

Suicide Rates
The Guardian
Office for National Statistics   The reason I have used this data is I want to have a proper understanding of the facts and figures behind suicide in the UK. I feel this is a important thing to do when making this film because I want to make as truthful as I can. To make sure it wont disrespect anyone who is having problems with any mental health.

Thursday 24 March 2016

Analyse the Brief

Suicide and Depression

For this FMP we have been given 10 weeks to create a project. We were given some ideas of what we could create our project on. Within the 10 weeks we had to plan and research our idea and turn it into a piece of work. For my project I am creating a short film about suicide in the style of a monologue. I will be doing research into suicide and the stats surrounding it. I will also look at how to create a good and powerful monologue. I want to be constantly reflecting on my work weather that will be using blogger or asking people what they think.
Once I have done this I will reflect on what I have found and how it will help with my project. After this I will be able to plan my film in more depth, after I have done a plan I will talk to people to see how the feel about the film and what they think I could do better. Also I feel like asking people how they think about the idea will help me get a better understanding of the people who are going to watch the film. I am planing on using music through out the film to help with the mood, I will be doing a mixture of sooting in the studio and out side on location.

Instagram Promo Videos

A video posted by Ben Wright (@bwrighty) on

A video posted by Ben Wright (@bwrighty) on

For this piece of work we had to create two Instagram promo videos. I have created two very different types of videos; I did this because I wanted to work on a large range of skills. I wanted to work on my audio mixing in postproduction.

My first video is about the Bath Abbey. For this video I focused more on the camera shots. I used my IPhone for a large part of it, I wanted to use the time-lapse mode. I find this to be the best way to get on also it is easier than doing it on a DSLR. I did also use my DSLR for a few shots, I did this because I didn’t want the whole video just to time-lapses. As this was an audio project I knew I needed to add sound in some way. I was going to get a ticking clock sound for the beginning but I didn’t work because the first shot was a time-lapse. So I decided just to music a sound track over it. For my audio track I used YouTube free music. I found two songs I liked. The first song I found was called ‘Tricker’ the reason I choses this song because I liked the tempo and the beat. The other song I had I felt like it didn’t work as well with the video. I kept the song simple and made sure there weren’t any words in it, I did this because I wanted people to focus on the camera shots. I am very happy with how this promo video turned out.

For my second promo video I knew I had to focus more on the audio as it was an audio project. I decided I would do a music video. I did this because I felt like you couldn’t get more audio than a music video. I decided to do it in the studio as it is a nice sized room for an acoustic song. As it was an acoustic song I wanted to make the set look a bit raw. So I left the mics in shot and I had the lights on display. When it came to recording the audio for the video, we had a mic for the vocals and one for the guitar. We ran them both through a sound desk where I could mix them. After that I put the track in to a recorder so I could then put it into Adobe Premiere Pro where I would edit the camera shots. When I started to edit the video I first had to sync the audio track with the camera audio. Once this was done I could start to play around with how the audio sounded, I decided I was going to add some reverb. This is what the reverb mixer looked liked. This is also what the timeline looked liked for the promo video.

I felt like this worked really well. It gave it a more acoustic sound which is what I wanted. After this I started to edit the video, I cut between the camera on the tri-pod and the camera I was walking around with. The camera on the tri-pod had a standard 18-55 mm lens. However, I put a 50mm on the camera that I was walking around with, I did this because I was able to get a bigger depth of field which I think really worked well. As it was an Instagram video it could on be 15 seconds, so I had to cut my video down. I did this by editing the whole video, so if I wanted to cut and chop it for the promo video I could. After editing the whole video, I decide that I would just use a 15 second part and not use different parts of the song. I did this because I felt like it would make more sense, as it’s a promo I added the musicians YouTube channel at the bottom of the video.

In conclusion I am very happy with how both promo videos turned out, I feel like I was able to capture two different types of audio. For the Abbey I only added music because I wanted people to focus on the imagery. I think this is a very important skill to have when creating films. You need to know when the audio should the main part and when the imagery needs to be. On the other hand, the music video showed my skill of live recording and mixing, also how to adjust the audio in post production. I feel like these two promo videos show a good rang of skills using audio.

Goals for the Future

When I leave college I want to go onto uni to study Media Production or Directing. I have a look at a few uni so when it comes to applying next year I have some idea of were I want to go.
So far I have looked at Bath Spa, Staffordshire, Lincoln and Bournemouth. The other uni's I want to look at are Bournemouth arts and UCLA. I also want to look at The Met Film School.
After uni I  really want to get a job working in films, I feel that I would enjoy working in film rather than T.V. I would really like to be come a director or a producer. I've always enjoyed the idea of being behind the camera and making the film.

Cold Fusion

Here is my final cut of my short film. I was able to keep it under three minutes. When I watch it back I am happy with how it looks however there are a few things that I would change about. I would of liked to re-do a few camera shots as they are not the best. Also I would of liked to try some pan shots. I did have these written down but because of time problems I wasn't able to do it. If I was to redo this move I would of made sure I stared recording as soon as I can so if there any problems with cast or site and can fix and work round them.
Over all I am very happy with how this short film turned out, I am looking forward to the next film I get to do and be able to apply and develop the skills I have learnt from this project.

Website of Mobile and Computer

Here the two final pages for my website
This image is of my Mobile design.  This is what happens when you click the menu button at the top. A box will aper I have done this because I want to it be simple to use and I don't want there to be lots of things on the front page.

This is what my home page looks like for the computer. I have put a slide show, showing four images. I have done this because its bigger so I am able to show each image at one time.

Testing set up for music video

Today I want to get an idea of what set up I want to have for my music video-
This is the practice setup. After doing this I know I want to use the soft boxes, this is because the light on the left is to bright and there are no cover for it. Also I have used the oft boxes before and I like how they look on camera.

Communication Channels

OfCom
'Ofcom is the communications regulator. We regulate the TV, radio and video on demand sectors, fixed line telecoms, mobiles, postal services, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.'
http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/tv-radio/protecting-children/

The Independent
Here is a copy of an article that is on there web page
‘If you have tuned in to the 2016 Presidential primaries for the first time today, the reaction to the Iowa caucuses may seem bewildering.
Ted Cruz, a man hated by the Republican establishment and a senator for only three years, has beaten Jeb Bush, who has spent nearly $100 million winning a few thousand votes.Donald Trump, a pantomime act six months ago, beat everyone but Cruz, including Republican golden boy Marco Rubio.Half a dozen well-established names, from Bush to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul, as well as Rick Santorum and Mike Huckabee, the two previous winners of the Iowa caucuses, have all been soundly beaten.Instead, Cruz, Trump and Ben Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, have won more than 60 per cent of the Iowa vote between them. But tonight Trump isn't a winner nor Rubio a loser. Expectations are everything, and Trump was expected to win, while Rubio was predicted to be a distant third.’
Here you can see that they use long text and more elaborate words. This is because it’s an article and not a news story. With articles you are able to go into more detail and explain thing in more detail. If this was to be reported on the news they would have to make it a simple and quick as they could.

TV AND RADIO
There is a big difference with T.V and radio. When it comes to the writing in radio you have to be much more descriptive with your words as there are no cameras. However when it comes to T.V you don’t need to have as much emotion in the words because the camera and there facial expressions can really help tell the story.

Planning our Toy

In this lesson we created our first idea of our toy. My group are making a dolls house made out of smaller blocks. We are doing this so you can make what ever sort of house you want. the blocks will be different colours, they will be made out of foam with velcro.
in the next lesson we will start to deign our toy in a program so we can get a better idea of what it will look like.

Third Button

This is my third and final button. For this button we had to show how a steam engine works. i decided I wanted to draw a train and have text to show how they work. I am really happy with how this one turned out. When I started this question I wasn't to sure how I was going to do it, but I am very happy with how the drawing turned out.

Second Button

This is my second button. For this button we had to show how you made pop corn I used the same green star for when you put you mouse over the red star, this will be used in all three buttons. When you click A drawing and text will show. The drawing is the equipment that you will need. The text is how you make the popcorn.

First Button

This is what my first button i made for this project. This will be the most simple one out of the three.
When you put your mouse over the red star it will turn green then when you click it will come up with the text on how popcorn is made.

First Popcorn

This is my first time looking at Popcorn and coming up with ideas. I drew a simple piece of corn and made it move. This was my first ideas for the final piece

Final Popcorn

I have now finished my Popcorn Gif. I have finished all three questions with text and a image.

Here you can see what each button does.

Filming With A Green Screen

Today I started filming for my sort film call 'Cold Fusion' for this scene I used a green screen. This was the first time I had ever used a one.
This is what my set up looked liked. I used two lights to light the green screen as you need to get the same colour a cross the whole green screen. I then used two soft boxes for the actors.

Once I was in Premiere Pro I was able to use the 'Ultra Key' tool select the green screen. Once I had done this I was able to use photos to place over the green screen.
The last image is of what the scene could look like once I put a photo in.

For this task we had to follow instructions on how to make a weather app design, on Photoshop. We had to follow each step. However we did have to make it different from the deign we were given. You had to go to 'Adobe Kuler' this is were you can see what colours match and work with each other.  You can see what colours I used for the photo bellow. The photo at the bottom is my final piece of work.
